The Music of Bernstein, Weill & Sondheim

Deborah Shulman and Larry Zalkind present a delightful program of songs by three icons of musical theater – Leonard Bernstein, Kurt Weill, and Stephen Sondheim. Shulman, the chanteuse known for her sophisticated, smokey, sensual voice, is a perfect paring for Zalkind, the highly regarded and award winning trombonist with the Utah Symphony Orchestra. Many of the compositions of Bernstein, Weill and Sondheim have elements not only of musical theater but also of jazz and classical music, genres that Shulman and Zalkind have richly explored both in live performance and on their different recordings.

The music is melodically intricate, harmonically advanced, and emotionally complex. Shulman does a marvelous job of revealing the nuances and heart of these numbers, while Zalkind’s trombone is sensitive and intuitive. Her voice and his accompaniment create a beautiful marriage of tonality, structure and sensibility.

Shulman and Zalkind are great entertainers and create a musical evening of wit, intelligence, and heart. Audiences who are familiar with Bernstein, Weill and Sondheim are sure to come away with a new appreciation of their musical genius.

“Lost in the Stars is an album of finely-tuned music presented with flair by musicians of the highest order. Shulman’s tones are elegant but sometimes cutting, a perfect match for Zalkind’s straight-shooting trombone.” ~ Jordan Richardson, Blinded By Sound
